Alsace is the home of Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer, in both dry and sweet styles as well as making some exceptional dry Rieslings. The German influence in Alsace is evident in the varieties planted, the steepness of vineyard plantings and the architecture of the region. The dry, sun-riddled climate has attracted many bio-dynamic producers that are doing some exceptional things with Alsatian terroir. The wines from Alsace tend to be great value as they often don’t receive as much hype as some other regions and even the most expensive bottles are still reasonably priced compared to the greatest of other regions.

LOCATION:

Alsace is located to the very far east of France, near the border with Germany along the Rhine river. The Vosges mountain range runs north-south along the western part of the appellation and protects the region from heavy rainfall and wind. The best Grand Cru sites of the region are located on this slope due to the ideal altitude, sun exposure and drainage.

TERROIR:

The geology of Alsace is like a mosaic as a result of being located on a geological fault, from granite to limestone along with clay, shale, and sandstone. This area has some of the lowest average rainfall in all of France which is beneficial for both making the vines struggle, and for reducing disease pressure. The Vosge mountain range protecting the region from the westerly winds also aids with reducing disease pressure which is why so many producers are able to farm biodynamically here.

VARIETIES:

The four main varieties, also known as the “Noble Grapes” are Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat and Gewurztraminer. These are the only grapes allowed in anything labelled as Grand Cru. Riesling and Muscat are made in a dry style in Alsace, whereas single varietal Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer are traditionally made in an off-dry style. “Vendanges Tardives” or late harvest wines can be made from these noble varieties which are often sweet, although can sometimes be fermented to dryness for a fuller-bodied wine. Sweet wines made from botrytised noble grapes will be labelled “Sélection de Grains Nobles”.
