Wines from Auvergne are rare and very difficult to find in Australia but the reds can make a great alternative to Beaujolais and the whites would be up the alley of any Chardonnay lover. This beautiful region is on the rise with many younger, newly established producers finding land more affordable than the more famous regions around France. One to watch and explore!
LOCATION:
Auvergne is located in south central France, west of Beaujolais surrounded by the mountains of the Massif Central and extinct volcanoes.
TERROIR:
The average temperature is lower than that of Burgundy due to the cool continental climate as well as the altitude, with most vineyards being located at 400m-500m above sea level. The Allier and Loire Rivers run through the gaps in the mountains and provide some moderating influence and the soil is mainly calcareous-based due to the volcanoes.
VARIETIES:
Chardonnay is the most common white varietal in Auvergne and Gamay and Pinot Noir for the reds which produce a lighter-bodied, less structured wine than those in Burgundy and Beaujolais from the same varieties.
PRODUCERS:
Henri Chauvet, Mito Inoue, Domaine des Berioles, Les Vignerons de Saint-Pourcain
