Translation missing: en.Jura: Jura

Jura is one of the most loved regions for wine nerds around the world due to the highly terroir-expressive whites and reds that are made here and the unique winemaking techniques. Jura is known for producing oxidative whites in which the wine is aged in a barrel that is not topped up, thus a layer of microbial flor lines the top of the wine which imparts unique flavours. Vin Jaune (literally yellow wine) is a famous style from the region which is aged for a long time under flor and shares many similarities with Sherry without fortification. There can also be lots of value to be found in their sparkling wines for those wanting to branch out and try some interesting bubbles outside of Champagne.

LOCATION:
The region of Jura is located between Burgundy to the west on the other side of the Saone River and the Swiss border to the east. The area forms a narrow strip that runs roughly 80km from north to south.

TERROIR:
Jura has a cool continental climate and has relatively dry summers with cool winters. Most of the vineyards are planted at the foothills of the Jura mountains at roughly 300m above sea level and planted on south-facing slopes to capitalise on the sunshine. The soil type in Jura is mainly Jurassic limestone and marl, the word “Jurassic” being derived from Jura due to the mountains representing the key geological changes that occurred during 145 million and 200 million years ago.

VARIETIES:
The main white varieties are Savagnin and Chardonnay which can be produced sous voile (‘under veil’) i.e. under a layer of flor in barrel without topping up in an oxidative style or produced by topping up the barrels called ouillé. The main reds are Trousseau, Poulsard and Pinot Noir.
