One of Italy’s most progressive and internationally recognised white wine regions, Friuli Venezia-Giulia is known for its precise, textured, and often skin-contact driven wines. It shares strong cultural ties with Slovenia and Austria, reflected in both its grape varieties and winemaking philosophies. This is a region for those who love detail, texture and finesse in their whites — but also home to some surprisingly complex reds.

LOCATION

Situated in Italy’s northeast, Friuli borders Austria to the north, Slovenia to the east, Veneto to the west, and the Adriatic Sea to the south.

TERROIR:

The region benefits from a unique mix of Alpine and maritime influences. The Colli Orientali and Collio DOCs are particularly prized for their marl and sandstone soils (known locally as ponca) that help produce mineral-driven, ageworthy whites. Further south, flatter land and more fertile soils dominate.

VARIETIES:

White varieties dominate: Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana, Pinot Grigio, and

Sauvignon Blanc are key. For reds, expect Refosco, Schioppettino, and Merlot. Orange wines made from extended skin contact are common among natural producers.
