SICILY

One of Italy’s most dynamic wine regions, Sicily has transformed its image in recent decades from bulk production to a hotbed of quality, particularly on Etna and in the west. Diverse soils, grapes and microclimates make it an exciting region for exploration.


LOCATION:
Italy’s largest island, located just off the southern tip of the mainland.


TERROIR:
Volcanic soils on Etna are prized for mineral-laden, high-acid wines. Inland areas are more arid and hot. Coastal zones enjoy strong diurnal shifts and sea influence.


VARIETIES:
Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio dominate Etna. Nero d’Avola is the flagship red elsewhere. Carricante and Grillo lead the whites, with Catarratto also important.
