Often called the “green heart” of Italy, Umbria is a landlocked region producing deeply
traditional reds and compelling white wines, especially from Orvieto. It’s less famous than Tuscany, but with comparable quality at times.
LOCATION:
Central Italy, between Tuscany and Marche.
TERROIR:
Hilly terrain with clay, limestone, and volcanic soils. The continental climate is tempered by altitude, allowing for good freshness in wines.
VARIETES:
Sagrantino (Montefalco) is Umbria’s iconic red - intense, tannic and full-bodied. Sangiovese is also widespread. Grechetto and Trebbiano are used for fresh, often floral whites.
