The Moreau name needs no introduction in Chablis, being one of the oldest and most well-respected families in the region with a history going back generations.
Domaine Christian Moreau Père & Fils was established in 2001 by père Christian and fils Fabien, with Fabien representing the 6th generation of this branch of Moreau winemakers.
Thanks to this prestigious family history, the domaine now holds an impressive 8 hectares of Chablis' total 92 hectares of Grand Cru soil. Rather than allowing the performance pressure of pedigree to get to the 6th generation current winemaker, Fabien notes that "with the quality of the vineyard that my family passed on, the basis of the expression of our wines is here, and our work is to honour our terroirs".
And honour it he does, through his fastidious viti- and viniculture, and today, his father's namesake is now regarded amongst the likes of Raveneau and Dauvissat.
Fabien began converting the family holdings to organic farming in 2010, and today he and his team pick every grape from every site by hand. 2021 challenged most of France with chilling frosts, and saw the domaine spend a small fortune on purchasing then individually lighting frost candles throughout their Grand Cru sites to protect what they could. Fabien and Christian remark that despite each year bringing a new challenge, "each year comforts us in our choice".
Though not quite as warm as its predeceasing vintages, Fabian observed that 2020 brought about a "very fresh, mineral vintage with less alcoholic level and nice tension." Unfortunately the effects of the 2021 frosts are seen in the reduced volumes of Chablis and Petit Chablis produced, so get in quick for some still stunning wines of pedigree. The Christian Moreau Chablis comes from the site that sits between the premier cru sites of Montée de Tonnerre and Vaillons, famed for producing wines of depth and character. Even the Petit Chablis site sits above the Grand Cru Valmur site, so though they are younger vines, you can expect far more depth, precision and detail than other Petit Chablis.

JAYA
Barossa Shiraz fans seeking a little bit more savoury nuance and restraint will be very happy with this. Straddles the line between medium and full bodied with a balance of ripe dark berries, a touch of oak sweetness with hints of earth and spice. A very appropriate wine for the the current wet and cold. - Pete L
