Pierre Girardin

Pierre-Vincent Girardin's wines have been making the rounds with wine nerds around the world, making some sensational Burgundy as a 13th generation winemaker. His first vintage was at the age of 21 growing up amongst the wines of his family estate Domaine Vincent Girardin. His father held on to some carefully selected parcels when this Domaine was sold in 2012 which Pierre keeps close to his heart and is now able to work with under his eponymous label. I tasted these wines at a Burgundy trade tasting event a few months ago and they were my favourites of both white and red - a tasting that included the likes of Roulot and Henri Boillot!

Pierre works with organic grapes from his own estate-owned vineyards as well as some choice plots that he purchases from and for which he does all the viticulture. He has introduced biodynamic practices as well, working with the lunar calendar and other unique choices such as raising trellises rather than pruning leaves off his vines to encourage photosynthesis without clipping the vines. He even commissions custom barrels of 456L from Tonnellerie François Frères to reduce the influence of new wood. His reds are made with little to no pigeage after a long and gentle press to ensure the terroir is brought to the forefront. All of these wines are unfined and unfiltered to ensure that they retain their terroir-driven character.

We've just picked up the amazing 2023 whites and have some of the 2021 reds as well which are drinking well right now. The '23 'Eclat de Calcaire' (also available in magnum) is 100% Chardonnay, from organically grown vines from 5 lieux-dits in Meursault (Magny, Murger des Limozins and Les Herbeux for 80%), Pommard (l’Aumone 10%) and Volnay (Monpoulain 10%). All on limestone soils, the grapes are combined and vinified as whole clusters, then has 9 months in oak barrels (30% new) and 3 months in steel tanks. Incredibly detailed and full-bodied. The '23 'Beaune Les Grandes Epenotes 1er' comes from a chalky parcel on the Pommard border with SE exposure and is vinified with 100% whole bunches and aged in 40% new wood for 9 months. This one is incredible white Burgundy for the money. The '23 'Chassagne-Montrachet' and '23 'Chassagne-Montrachet Clos Reland 1er' are incredibly detailed wines from his efforts in this village. The '23 'Meursault Les Virueils' comes from a parcel on top of the hill o marl and limestone soils, vinified as whole clusters and ages in 456L barrels (70% new) for 10 months followed by another 6 in bottle and the '23 'Meursault Le Poruzot 1er' comes from one of the best sites in the village. There's also the '21 'Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru' and a magnum of the '21 'Corton Charlemagne La Croix Grand Cru'. We have a range of his reds including: '21 'Vosne-Romanee La Colombiere', '21 'Vosne-Romanee Les Hauts Beaumonts', '21 'Pommard Les Rugiens Bas 1er', '21 'Vosne-Romanee Aux Champs Perdrix' and the '21 'Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots 1er'. These are some absolutely sensational wines that stood out in a tasting room full of cult Burgundy legends - don't pass on these!

Moorooduc Tasting

Saturday 29th

3pm - 6pm

Join us this Saturday as we taste through the excellent wines of Mornington Peninsula's Moorooduc!

Moorooduc was established by Dr. Richard McIntyre who is joined by his daughter and Master of Wine Kate McIntrye who were among the first to plant in the region in 1982. They have a 12 acre vineyard and make small-batch wines with native yeasts and relatively hands-off winemaking. These wines are light, detailed and perhaps the most representative of the region of Mornington Peninsula. These are the wines that we'll be pouring on the day:

Estate Chardonnay 2024
Robinson Chardonnay 2023
Estate Pink Gris 2024
Estate Pinot Noir 2023
Duck Pinot Noir 2023
Garden Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023

These wines never disappoint - come down to the shop and taste some of the best wines coming out of Mornington Peninsula!
