Sicilian Reds

Sicily is a region that has deservedly received a lot of hype in recent years thanks to some excellent quality-minded producers doing excellent work with indigenous varieties. A lot of people will think of Sicily as a warm and dry region (and it is, for the most part), although there is a lot of diversity in the region and Etna is actually fairly cool and receives a lot of rain.

The warm and dry conditions have attracted many producers to the region that work organically/biodynamically as the ease of farming allows them to do so without risking as much of their crop to disease. The exploration of indigenous as well as some international varieties across a range of terroirs from volcanic soils in Etna to red clays further south means there are a wide range of wine styles coming out of the region.

I always love to showcase and talk about Sicilian wines being part Sicilian myself. We have some excellent value wines here from Orestiadi (both the Nerello Mascalese and Nero d’Avola) as well as a great Nero d’Avola from Petrosino. Then we move on to some more classic and iconic wines from the region with the increasingly popular Lamoresca which we’ve just got in stock followed by probably the 2 best producers in Etna - Tenuta delle Terre Nere and Passopisciaro. As we are now well into the transition from late autumn into winter, this is the perfect time to bring these wines to your attention as they are perfect if you want to be cosy in cold, rainy weather. Pickup some of these great Sicilian wines today!

Gembrook Hill

After searching through almost every winemaking region in Victoria, Ian and June Marks found their perfect little pocket of land in 1983 in the Upper Yarra Valley. With views of Mt Donna Buang, a backdrop of the Warburton ranges, red soil and a coveted north-easterly aspect, it is the perfect spot for cool climate winemaking. Gembrook Hill led the way as part of the so-called “second wave” of Yarra Valley winemakers and now own some of the oldest vines in the Upper Yarra.

The Gembrook Hill vineyard is planted in a hilly amphitheater with perfect north and east exposure on red volcanic loam. These vines are unirrigated, hand-pruned and harvested and low-yielding to encapsulate that sweet terroir. Ian and June understand that wine is made in the vineyard so the winemaking approach is that of minimal handling. The grapes have little to no filtration and are only aged in French oak in a range of hogsheads, barriques and puncheons. Burgundian sensibilities on prime Yarra real estate.

We have 3 of Gembrook Hill’s wines in stock. Firstly, the ‘18 ‘Blanc de Blancs’ is a zero dosage classic Aussie sparkling wine and can hold its own against Champagne that sells for twice the price. The ‘24 ‘Village Pinot Noir’ is a fantastic Yarra Pinot at this price made from fully de-stemmed grapes that are aged in old French oak. Finally, the ‘24 ‘Estate Pinot Noir’ is the top Pinot Noir we have from them made from grapes grown on their fantastic estate. These are some fantastic wines from one of Yarra Valley’s greatest producers - stock up on these for winter!
