HANDPICKED: FIGHTING GULLY ROAD VERDICCHIO

This is probably the best value alternative white wine in the country. I had heard good things about this wine before, but after tasting it with the man Mark Walpole himself a few weeks ago, there was no denying it. This spends about a year in wood on its lees to create a medium to full-bodied texture with an amazing concentration of flavours, predominantly white stone fruits, white flowers and salinity keeping it all together. Lots of acid and vibrancy to keep the power in check - I can't see anyone walking away disappointed after buying this wine. I can't recommend this wine enough as one of the best Aussie takes on an Italian white grape - check it out for yourself!

THE OCCASION EDIT: WINTER PARTY REDS UNDER $40

Winter has a funny way of pulling everyone back around the table. The nights get long and cold, so we all end up indoors with a few mates, something cooking away slowly in the oven and a table full of bits and pieces to graze on. These are our favourite kinds of nights, nothing fancy, just good food, good company and plenty of good bottles doing the rounds. Wine like this is made to be shared, poured freely and argued over, and the best part is you don't need to spend a fortune to drink really well. So we've rounded up six of our favourite reds for exactly these occasions. They're full of character, they go with just about anything you'd put on the table, and every single one comes in under $40 in any six.

For the fresher end of things the Château de La Chaize Gamay is a cracker, all crunchy red cherry and raspberry with heaps of energy, and it loves a slight chill - Beaujolais without the price tag. The Les Fruits Collines Pinot Noir is the savoury, perfumed one, full of dark cherry, earth and spice with a pretty floral lift. The Koerner Clare Red Blend is structured but elegant with an earthy edge that's brilliant next to a bit of red meat, the Thistledown Cunning Plan Shiraz is plush and generous with all that lovely McLaren Vale plum and spice, and the Cantina Orsogna Montepulciano is a proper winter warmer, loaded with black cherry, cocoa and supple tannin for the coldest of nights. Last but not least the Bondar Junto GSM, which might just be the best value GSM in the country, smooth, savoury and made for a barbecue.

Grab a few, share them around and settle in for the night!
