Cellaring wines is unfortunately becoming less and less popular these days - around 95% of wines bought in a store are drunk within 24 hours.

There could be a few factors for this - smaller properties than in the past means less space for a cellar, not knowing which wines to cellar or knowing how to long to cellar them. We can help with the last two points at least.

There is a misconception that wines need to be at a certain price point to be "worth cellaring". While it is true that most wines at a certain price point generally need some degree of time to show their full potential, that doesn't mean that some wines that are a bit cheaper can't improve with age either. The main factors that determine the cellarability of a wine are the acid, tannins in red wine and the flavour concentration. Wines do not need to be over $500 to have these characteristics.

I've selected 6 wines below all under $100; 3 whites and 3 reds that I believe will develop and become more complex and interesting wines with some bottle age. While I believe that all of these wines would be able to comfortably cruise to 10+ years in the cellar, you don't have to wait that long to enjoy them. Just a few extra years in bottle can do wonders for a wine to help soften it and build a bit more complexity. Even as little as 6 months can help if you don't have the patience to wait years. We will often taste wine on release and then retaste it 6 months later to find that it is just so much more complete.
