Home Hill
Home Hill is an award-winning family-run affair based down in the Huon Valley of Tasmania. With what started off as a hobby farm with some apple plantings and a meagre 6 rows of vines has turned into one of the greatest producers in the region, led by Rosemary and Terry Bennett. Terry and Rosemary's youngest son Sean is the Vineyard Manager and assists Terry with the careful planning and assiduous cropping levels of the 6 hectare vineyard. Daughter Kelly manages the Wine Club, among a long list of duties and demands. Rosemary's sister Gail is the Office & Function Manager and her niece Prue is the PR & Marketing Manager.
The Huon Valley sits on the same degree of latitude as Bordeaux in France (albeit forty-three degrees south of the equator rather than north). These regions share a similar climate, with winters featuring fog, frost and snow and an abundance of spring rain which allows for the slow ripening of fruit during warm months and the perfect conditions for cool climate wine to be produced. The fertile grey loam over clay soil makes trellising and vineyard work crucial to manage vigour to produce detailed, concentrated wines. All of these factors contribute to produce compelling wines that speak to their place.
We've just stocked up on 2 of Home Hill's great Pinots. The '24 'Landslide Pinot Noir' is aged in oak for 8 months and is a darker-fruited, supple and ready-to-drink Pinot Noir. The '23 'Estate Pinot Noir' is made with just 3% whole bunches and ages in 20% new oak for 10 months. This wine is dark and earthy - great to drink now but will also evolve in the bottle. These are some excellent wines from one of the best producers in the region - don't hesitate to pick these up!
