Marina Coppi St Andrea Barbera 2011 (Colli Tortonesi DOC)

Colli Tortonesi is a DOC of Piedmont, in north-western Italy, which covers red and white wines made in the hills around Tortona. One of the earlier Piedmont DOCs, the title was created in 1973, just before its prestigious neighbor Gavi.

The wine is 90% Barbera 10% Croatina

Fermentation in steel tanks and then matured for another 9 months in steel tanks only. Further 3 months in bottle for refinement.

The nose shows bright fresh fruits of wild strawberry and some herbal notes. The palate also showing some lovely bright red fruits however a sophisticated velvet mouth feel shows more depth. Great fine tannin and acidity makes this very enjoyable drink. One of the tasters suggested that it was ” extremely quaffable and joyful” I would say it has a lot more character than that but either way it’s a great drink.

A little history. Marin Coppi is a family run estate in hills of Castellania in SE Piedmont. It was established in 2003 by Francesco Bellocchio who was the grandson of Fausto Coppi who was Italy’s most famous cyclist (5 time winner of Giro Italia and 2 time winner of Tour De France).
