MEET THE MAKER
Gullyview Estate Tasting
Wednesday
24th July 5:30PM-7:30PM
This is one last reminder to you all that tomorrow on Wednesday the 24th we will have the pleasure of hosting Jono Koerner of Koerner wines showcasing his solo project - Gullyview Estate. These are some seriously well-made and well-priced wines coming out of Clare Valley that are true to their respective variety and site. I tried these wines a few months ago and was thoroughly impressed so I am also excited to retaste these with you. Jono will be pouring the following wines on the day:
24 Brothers Riesling
23 Albert's Vermentino
24 Brothers Light Red
23 The Fruitful Grenache
23 Countryside Cabernet Sauvignon
Mont-Redon
We've just had some fresh stock of a fan-favourite Rhône producer Mont-Redon arrive. This is a producer that many of you are probably already familiar with as they always fly out of the store as soon as they arrive.
For those that are unfamiliar with the estate, Mont-Redon was established in 1923 by Henri Plantin who certainly got to plantin' in the northwest corner of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Henri saw the potential in the terroir of the sites, with the estate being home to 3 of the most important terroirs of the appellation, namely: the pebbles of the plateau, then the safres (compact sand) and the urgonian limestones. These three very complementary terroirs are the keystone of the complexity and quality of their wines.
The 3 wines listed below are all sensational for the price. The white and red Côtes du Rhône wines are almost universally known as some of the most reliable and great value wines in all the Rhône. The Lirac is also fantastic for the price too and is a great option for anyone who wants to try a jump up in quality without breaking the bank. These warming wines are perfect for these freezing Winter nights!Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon
Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon is the exciting project into the Mâconnais of Dominique Lafon, known as one of Burgundy's greatest biodynamic producers. Domaine Comte Lafon is one of the best producers in Meursault next to Coche-Dury, who then saw the potential in the great sites a bit further south - a trend that has been followed by the likes of other Burg legends such as Domaine Leflaive.
Historically, the Mâconnais was known only for producing high-volume, low quality wines in bulk. It wasn't until Dominique's keen eye picked out some top-notch sites on the region's rolling hills at higher altitude with plantings of older vines that the potential of the region had started to be unlocked. All of these sites that Dominique had singled out began to be farmed biodynamically straight away, allowing us to better experience the specificity of the vineyards in all their glory. Dominique applies the same level of care to the winemaking here as he does with his estate in Meursault that earnt him so much respect and fame. Fermentation is in tank on a plot-by-plot basis and ageing is tailored to each terroir, in a mixture of steel tanks, wooden foudres, and demi-muid oak casks. Nowadays, Dominique's nephew and daughter, Pierre and Léa Lafon are in charge and taking care of business, making sure the beauty of the Mâconnais' wines is experienced around the world.
We've got a selection of 5 wines from this producer to showcase the different sites of the region. The '22 'Macon-Villages' is a great introduction to both the region and producer. Some of you may remember this wine as we poured it in-store for our Burgundy tasting a few weeks back and consequently sold through heaps. Moving slightly up the ladder we have the '22 'Macon-Milly-Lamartine' and the '22 'Clos du Four', a single vineyard within that same village. Then from some of the other best known areas of the region, we have the '22 'Viré-Clessé' and the '22 'Pouilly-Fuissé'. These are all sensational wines without the heft pricetag that the original Domaine in Meursault commands. Drink up!Martin Texier Tasting Saturday 27th 3pm-6pm
This Saturday we will be pouring some unique and great wines from the little-known appellation of Ardeche, one of Rhône's little gems. The winemaking thumbprint is as minimal as possible so you can taste what these unique sites themselves have to say. These are the wines that we'll be pouring:
Petit Nature (Muscat a petit Grains)
La Rouviere (Clairette/Roussane)
2022 Grenache
2020 Brezeme (Syrah)
2021 Ceruoan (Serine)
I had the chance to taste through these wines last week and was very impressed, even by the Pet-Nat which is a style I would not usually seek out. This is a great chance to try something off the beaten path. See you all there!Get Edgy with Dredgy @ Otis
