PRODUCER PROFILE: AGRICOLA

Our first introduction to these wines was last year when one of Callum Powell's mates who lives around the corner from the store, kindly left us with a sample of the '23 Flaxman Valley' to taste. Three of us who would rarely gravitate towards a Barossa Shiraz stood around this bottle discussing the nuances that this wine slowly revealed and that we knew we were tasting part of a refreshing new wave running through the now not-so-cool Barossa Valley. These are "THE" new wines of Barossa and Eden Valley.

Agricola Vinters was founded by Callum Powell, son of David Powell of Torbreck with whom he worked alongside for many years. With a deep knowledge of and access to the best local sites, Callum is able to bring his terroir-driven approach to making wine to these sites that he picked up from working vintages with the likes of Jean-Louis Chave in Hermitage, forming part of a renaissance in winemaking in the Barossa Zone.

Callum works with Shiraz, often from very old vines in some of the most iconic vineyards in the region such as the Hoffman Dimchurch and Dallwitz blocks. Aiming to let the grapes express their site without being smothered by oak or losing their character with over-ripeness, Callum works (or doesn't work) the grapes with as little influence as possible, often 100% whole bunches and lets them settle on their lees for at least 12 months before bottling. The resulting wines are incredibly fresh, perfumed and savoury.

Callum also dropped into the shop a few weeks ago and gave us as taste of the '22 'Flaxman Valley' which was looking amazing, and to let us know about this incredible 2025 release. We've got a lot more wines from Callum now to offer starting with the '25 'Flaxman Valley Riesling' made from 100+ year old vines in Eden Valley and barely 1000 bottles produced. The '25 'K' Sands Shiraz' comes from a vineyard with vines planted in 1864 and the other planting of vines over 50 years old and the '25 'Ebenezer Shiraz' comes from the famous Hoffman Dalwitz block - this is the most powerful and brooding of the range. There are 2 renditions of Flaxman Valley - '25 'Seeliger Shiraz' from 100-year-old, dry grown vines on the hillside of the southern Flaxman Valley which expresses a brighter side of Flaxman Valley compared to the elevated rocky hillside that produces the '25 'Naimanya & Home Shiraz'.These are some sensational wines that are produced in small quantities and re-imagining what is possible in the Barossa. DISCOVERY POUR: CHARLES OLIVER SAUVIGNON BLANC

This week we're helping you discover an incredibly underrated producer making wine in the Pyrenees of Victoria. Charles Oliver's Sauvignon Blanc is something special. I tasted this blind last week and initially thought it was a Loire Valley Chenin Blanc before calling it a Jura Chardonnnay. As you can imagine, I was shocked to discover it was a Victorian Sauvignon Blanc! This wine is rich, slightly oxidative and textural with layers of stone fruit, lemon, yellow flowers and saltiness coming together. It is incredibly complex and balanced after spending 20 months in oak, definitely a wine that could persuade that "I don't drink Sauvignon Blanc" crowd. Take this chance to discover an amazing Aussie producer doing cool things in Western Victoria!

JUST IN

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, or PYCM as everyone calls them at this point, are one of the most exciting and globally sought after new wave estates in modern Burgundy and squarely at the front of the conversation around the next generation of the Côte de Beaune. The vineyards are farmed on organic principles and picking is timed for that fine balance between freshness and ripeness the wines have become known for. The whites are whole bunch pressed, fermented on native yeasts and aged on lees in mostly 350L barrels with no battonage and no filtration, in a very cool cellar that helps keep the tension in the wines. These are some of the most sought-after wines in Burgundy - snap these up!

 

Domaine du Marcoux

Domaine de Marcoux is to some extent, a hidden treasure in Châteauneuf, producing only 2000-4000 cases for the whole world. They were one of the first to convert to biodynamics in the region roughly 30 years ago and are considered pioneers for biodynamics in France. In a region that can be known to produce jammy, oaky and overly alcoholic wines, Marcoux are a breath of fresh air with their more tasteful elegance.

Join us this Saturday for a tasting of some of Victoria's most exciting wines. Owen Latta is based in the small town of Coghills Creek just 25km NW of Ballarat. Owen has been long respected in the industry which was cemented with the 2025 Young Gun of Wine Award! The Latta range represents the fun and experimental line of Owen's work with interesting blends, varietals and sulphur-free wines, whereas the Eastern Peake line is a bit more "serious" and primarily Burgundian grape varieties.

These are the wines we'll be pouring on the day: Latta 'Tranquil' Method Traditional, Latta 'Bad Reputation' Viognier, Latta 'Quartz Bianco' Sauvignon Blanc, Latta 'Dexterous' Skin Contact Pinot Gris, Eastern Peake Western Vic Chardonnay and the Eastern Peake 'Two Mile Hill' Pinot Noir.
