Saturday 23rd of March

3-6PM

“They are the best producer of sparkling wine from Spain.” - Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate

“‘First Growths’ of Cava. It was like being elevated to a higher level of complexity, a thrilling example of tense, mineral-rich Cava that has a distinct Champagne-like personality.” - Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate

“I’m not sure if there is any other sparkling wine producer in the world who works with such strict standards… Congratulations to the Mata family and to winemaker Ton Mata for such achievement. There is a sense of energy and harmony in their wines that is impressive; they are all highly recommended.” - Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate

Recaredo is regarded by many critics as the top sparkling wine producer in Spain, based in Catalonia's Alt Penedès region, distinguishing itself by matching the quality, uniqueness and ethos of top Champagne growers. Established in 1924 by Josep Mata Capellades, Recaredo pioneered the production of brut nature sparkling wines, particularly utilising the indigenous Xarel·lo grape variety. Today, under the leadership of Ton Mata, the winery continues its legacy of excellence and innovation, marked by sustainable practices and a commitment to crafting wines that reflect their terroir.

With a history rooted in the heart of Catalonia, Recaredo's vineyards benefit from the region's calcareous soils and proximity to the Montserrat Mountains. These vineyards, located within 25 kilometers of the cellar in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, are biodynamic certified, with a focus on dry-farming and traditional methods such as horse-ploughing. The winemaking process at Recaredo is meticulous, involving native yeast fermentations, extended lees aging, and manual disgorgement, ensuring the preservation of the wines' unique character and integrity.

Recaredo's commitment to quality extends beyond its winemaking practices to its participation in Corpinnat, an organization dedicated to promoting excellence in sparkling wine production in the Penedès region. By adhering to strict guidelines and emphasizing estate-grown fruit, Recaredo reinforces its dedication to crafting wines that authentically represent their origins. Additionally, Recaredo's decision to leave the Cava D.O. and join Corpinnat underscores its pursuit of quality and distinction in the world of sparkling wine.

The culmination of Recaredo's efforts is evident in its wines, which are bottled without dosage and showcase the purity of the fruit and the complexity derived from extended lees aging. These wines, described as more than just sparkling wines but as long-aged white wines, excel at the table, evolving with air and offering a journey of flavor and intricacy. Recaredo's brilliant and distinctive wines have garnered admiration both locally and internationally, inviting wine enthusiasts to experience the unparalleled craftsmanship and sense of place embodied in each bottle. - Pete L

Domenica

Chardonnay and Shiraz Release

It was only a few weeks ago that we sent out the offer for the Domenica Nebbiolo, in my opinion one of the country's finest. Following on from that release is the 2023 Chardonnay, 2021 Shiraz and not to be forgotten is the 2023 Nebbiolo Rose! These wines have always flown out the door and for good reason. They represent some of the best of Beechworth and the connection to Giaconda is clear when you taste them so it's nice to be able to offer them the week after Giaconda.

If Domenica is new to you or you missed the email from a few weeks ago then I've included a bit about the producer below from the Nebbiolo offer. Also we did score some more Nebbiolo so for those that missed out there is another six pack online now.

Peter Graham is a respected member of a group known as the Beechworth Vignerons. Like the other proud and passionate vigneron members of the North East Victorian group, the wines he makes come from fruit harvested from the vines he tends himself. And with 13 years working as assistant winemaker under fellow Beechworth Vigneron, Rick Kinzbrunner of the famed Giaconda, there is no mistaking where his passion for the GI and the respect he has earnt as a winemaker both come from.

Peter flew the Giaconda coop in 2012 with an opportunity arising to buy the project vineyard shared by Rick and Rhône Royalty, Michel Chapoutier. Since then, Peter has been tending his vines on the slopes of the foothills of Victoria's high county, including of course, Beechworth's golden varietals, Chardonnay and Shiraz. - Pete L

Pascal Cotat

2022 Sancerre Release

Pascal Cotat stands out as one of the most unique producers in Sancerre being one of a handful of producers making world class whites using Sauvignon Blanc. With his winery situated in Sancerre, Pascal Cotat, like his cousin François, produces exceptional wines that defy conventional boundaries and age gracefully for decades. These wines seamlessly blend opulent richness with precise focus and vitality. Pascal adheres to a strict harvesting regimen, meticulously hand-picking grapes at an exceptionally late stage, a practice that contributes to the weighty texture and intricate complexity of his wines setting him apart from the rest of the region.

Operating as one of France's smallest wine producers, Pascal Cotat owns just 2 hectares across two vineyards in Chavignol: the Grande Côte and the Monts Damnés. These vineyards boast vines exceeding 40 years old, contributing to the wines' depth and character. Following harvest, both wines undergo fermentation in demi-muids (600L) old barrels, where they age for 6 to 8 months with two rackings before being bottled unfiltered and unfined in the spring.

Given the minuscule production we are very fortunate to receive a 6 pack each of Grande Côte and Monts Damnés from Pascal. They are some of my favourite wines and a release I look forward to each year now. I had my eyes opened to the joys of Pascal Cotat a few years ago when one of my favourite customers opened a bottle to try in the shop one afternoon. These are remarkable wines. - Pete L

Mixed 6er Packs

If you missed our Tuesday email this week you might not know that we are doing packs! Yes, they are back. Some of you may remember the packs from the old website (Veno) and know how this works and why they are a great option. For those that don't here's the idea and why we think they are one of the best ways to shop with us.

We are constantly receiving deliveries of new wines, new vintages or top ups of our favourites and these packs are the best way for us to share those with you, especially if you can't make it to the store. One of the best parts of our job is tasting and selecting new wines that make it on to the shelves but the even better part is getting to share those bottles with you and by grabbing a pack you get to join the journey.

The idea is simple, first you pick what you would like to spend from the four available options:

Mixed 6er Pack #1 - $199

Mixed 6er Pack #2 - $249

Mixed 6er Pack #3 - $299

Mixed 6er Pack #4 - $349

Once that's covered you can either leave the selection entirely up to us or in the order comments specify whatever you'd like to receive from styles, to regions, varieties or even the occasion for example "I want wines perfect for a party" and we will curate a selection of wines that we think will tick all the boxes.

It is a great way for you to try new and exciting styles of wine but also a great deal. You are placing your trust in us to select exciting wines for you and as a reward we get to be a bit more generous with the discount so the packs are also great value. We are looking forward to being able to share our selections with you. - Pete L
