Germany is the spiritual home of Riesling, and few countries do white wine with such precision. Its best vineyards sit far north along cool river valleys, the Mosel with its dizzying slate slopes, plus the Rheingau, Pfalz, Nahe and Rheinhessen, where Riesling ripens slowly to give wines of piercing acidity, low alcohol and an almost weightless intensity. The styles run the full span, from bone dry (trocken) through to the lusciously sweet, all carrying that hallmark tension of fruit against minerality. There are also many interesting whites made from grapes such as Silvaner, Weissburgunder and Grauburgunder. The quality of Pinot Noir is also fantastic and rising and some other unique reds are made from slightly warmer regions such as Baden.
