Collection: Grenache Noir & Cannonau
Grenache is widely known as a grape varietal often blended with other grapes, but it is also a fantastic variety on its own. At one time the second most planted grape in the world, it remains one of the most prolific – in Spain, where it is known as Garnacha, it was for a long time the country’s most common red wine grape.
Grenache requires a hot, dry climate – explaining its overwhelming presence in Spain as well as southern France, in Sardinia, here in Australia and in inland California’s San Joaquin Valley. It was, in fact, Australia’s most planted red wine grape variety until the Shiraz usurped it. A lighter, translucent colour belies its higher alcohol content, which gives a medium to full body to its distinctive fruit candy, chocolate and cinnamon flavours.
This body and alcohol content combined with a lack of harsh tannins has seen Grenache widely used to add body and sweetness to other wines, as well as forming a base for fortified and port-style wines. Now, however, you will find Grenache feature red fruit flavours and subtle spice note, with more aged wines taking on subtle leather and tar flavours. The finest of these are highly coveted – premium Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines fetch over $500, while California’s top Grenache can command similar prices.
At Annandale Cellars, we offer both easy-drinking and opulent Grenache options, as well as everything in between. Call us on +61 (2)96601947 or send us an email at shop@acellars.com.au so our friendly, passionate staff can tell you more about buying fine Grenache wine.
