Nero D'Avola

When it comes to Italian wines, only a few are as influential as Nero d’Avola, a red wine which is a firm favourite with wine lovers worldwide.

Described as the most important red grape in Sicily, Nero d’Avola has become synonymous with medium to full-bodied red wines that are consumed the world over. Often compared to New World Shiraz, the wines combine dark fruit characters together with spicy pepper and a distinct note of dried herbs. It has a characterful, fruity bouquet, not dissimilar to the fragrance of blackberries, and is as delightful on the nose as it is on the palette.

The most famous region in Sicily for Nero d'Avola is Vittoria in the islands south-east. This grand grape variety has now become a signifcant part of the Australian vineyard scene with its natural drought and heat tolerance. The Australian versions are equisite and only getting better as our understanding of it increases.
