There is a long history of wines produced in New South Wales with some of the earliest white settlers planting vines in and around Sydney Cove. Sadly those vines no longer exist but the Hunter Valley just north of Sydney is officially Australia's oldest wine region still producing wines. With regions from the Queensland border all the way down to the Murray River and westward to the South Australian border the vineyards of New South Wales are planted out to an ever growing diversity of varietals and climates.
The best known wine regions in NSW are Orange, Mudgee, Hunter Valley, Canberra District, Tumbarumba, New England, Riverina, Shoalhaven Coast and Hastings River.
Orange is the only wine region of the world that is designated by altitude. It is defined as the area above 600m in the local government areas of Orange, Cabonne and Blayney and can be usefully described as a circle around Orange.
