Collection: Rayas
Château Rayas is one of the most mythical and singular estates in France, a domaine whose wines occupy a category entirely their own within Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Founded in the late 19th century and elevated to cult status under the legendary Jacques Reynaud, the estate is now overseen by his nephew Emmanuel Reynaud, who continues to craft wines of extraordinary purity, perfume and finesse. Rayas stands apart not only for its style but for its terroir: a pocket of cool, north-facing vineyards planted on pure, pale, wind-blown sand, unlike the region’s more typical galets roulés. This atypical site, combined with old, low-yielding Grenache vines, gives Rayas its ethereal texture and haunting aromatic lift.
The estate comprises three labels—Rayas, Fonsalette, and Pignan—each expressing different facets of the Reynaud philosophy. Farming is entirely hands-on and traditional, following organic principles without certification. Yields are famously tiny, harvesting is manual and late, and every detail in the vineyard is guided by intuition rather than formula.
In the cellar, Emmanuel Reynaud maintains the domaine’s distinctive approach: whole-bunch fermentation, long ageing in old demi-muids, no new oak, and minimal intervention at every stage. The goal is transparency and harmony, allowing Grenache (and Cinsault or Syrah at Fonsalette) to speak with clarity. Fermentations are gentle and slow; élevage often stretches over multiple years.
The resulting wines—whether the delicately perfumed Pignan, the deeper, more structured Fonsalette, or the transcendent Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge—are defined by their silken tannins, lifted aromatics and uncanny sense of levitation. They age gracefully for decades, developing complexity without losing freshness.
Château Rayas remains a singular voice in the Rhône: an estate where instinct, tradition and an exceptional terroir combine to produce some of the world’s most captivating and sought-after wines.
