Translation missing: en.Provence: Provence
Provence is a region with a rich winemaking history dating back over 2600 years. The region is most known for its pale-pink rose wines which are exported all over the world; however, they also produce spectacular ageworthy red wines from Mourvèdre in Bandol and many interesting white wines. ‘
LOCATION:
The region of Provence sits on the south Mediterranean coast of France, bordered by the Rhône River to the west and the Côte d’Azur to the east. The entire region is about 241km long and 161km from north to south.
TERROIR:
Provence receives a lot of sunlight without too much rain with warm days and cool nights moderated by the Mediterranean. The Mistral wind that comes down through the Rhône keeps the vineyards dry, mitigating disease pressure. There are lots of mountain ranges that provide slopes with ideal aspects for vines with limestone rich soils in the west and granite to the east with some volcanic soil in a certain pocket. There are lots of wild shrubs such as lavender, rosemary, juniper and thyme growing all over which can also influence the wines.
VARIETIES:
The main white grapes in Provence are: Rolle (Vermentino), Ugni Blanc (Trebbiano), Bourboulenc, Clairette, Marsanne, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc. The main red grapes are: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvédre, Carignan, Cinsault, Counoise, Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon.
PRODUCERS:
Domaine Tempier, Clos Cibonne, Clos Sainte Magdeleine, La Suffrene, Domaine du Trevallon, Domaine Ott, Château Simone
