Basilicata is a region in southern Italy that is often overlooked as the region is home to just one DOCG and four DOCs, which collectively cover only two bottles in every hundred produced here. It is best known for producing reds from the grape variety called Aglianico (often referred to as “Barolo of the south”) which creates full-bodied and long-lived wines with deep fruit and leather and earthy characters.
LOCATION:
Basilicate is located in the direct centre of the very south of the mainland of Italy facing out towards the Ionian Sea.
TERROIR:
The heart of viticulture in Basilicata is on the volcanic soils around Mount Vulture. The mountainous terrain can make viticulture difficult but also prevents a lot of opportunities while the region enjoys warm weather and sunshine for the most part of the growing season. There are moderating breezes that travel across the Ionian Sea from the Balkans.
VARIETIES:
Aglianico is without a doubt the driving force of production here making up over 80% of production.
PRODUCERS:
Paternoster, Elena Fucci, Grifalco, Basilisco
