Translation missing: en.LAZIO: LAZIO
While better known for Rome and ruins than for fine wine, Lazio has a long winemaking
tradition and is starting to see a revival in quality. Long-dismissed for its neutral white
blends, modern producers are reclaiming native varieties and volcanic terroir to produce exciting and highly drinkable wines.
LOCATION
Lazio is located in central Italy along the Tyrrhenian Sea, bordered by Tuscany to the
northwest, Umbria to the north, and Campania to the south.
TERROIR:
Volcanic soils dominate the zones around Rome and the Alban Hills, contributing to the
mineral freshness of many whites. The region’s inland hills and coastal zones offer moderate diurnal range, ideal for balanced acidity.
VARIETIES:
Malvasia Puntinata and Trebbiano Giallo are key whites, often blended under the Frascati DOC. Red wines from Cesanese are making a comeback, producing floral, medium-bodied reds with spice and earth.
PRODUCERS:
Famiglia Cotarella, Damiano Ciolli, Casale del Giglio, La Visciola, Omina Romana
