Giulia Negri
Giulia Negri is the Barolo Girl whose wines have taken the world by storm - crafting sensational expressions of Nebbiolo from the Serradenari cru of La Morra. Giulia was born in Palermo, grew up in Rome, studied in Milan, and then came back to Piedmont where she has family ties back to the 19th century. She was enamoured with her garagiste friends and wanted to make wine her own way, divorced from dogma and found her special place in the highest hills of Barolo.
"The musical instruments are tuned in the vineyard; the notes, aligned; and the changing rhythms of each vintage, revealed."
Giulia's vineyards are the highest plantings in the Barolo region at up to 546m above sea level and one of the last remaining combined truffle forests and grape growing operations in the Langhe Hills. Giulia farms her vineyards organically, which are planted on magnesium and limestone rich sandy soils that are unique to Serradenari. Traditional winemaking with long maceration and elevage in botti-grandi and minimal handling in the winery results in elegant, finely framed and powerful Barolo wines that are offer a unique pleasure in their youth but also have the backbone to develop over decades.
We've just received our recent allocation of these magnificent wines from the incredible 2021 vintage that we always take regardless of how well the wines of Piemonte are selling at the time. We have the '23 'Langhe Nebbiolo' which comes from a single vineyard and ages for 14 months in steel and 500l tonneaux, offering a more immediately pleasurable expression of Nebbiolo. The '21 'Barolo La Tartufaia' comes from a west-facing vineyard at 460m above sea level, sees a 40 day maceration and ages for 2 years in 25hl Slavonian oak barrels. A great snapshot into Giulia's work in Barolo. The '21 'Barolo Serradenari' comes from a SW-facing vineyard at 520m above sea level, also macerates for 40 days and ages for 30 months in the same type of oak barrels. Finally, the '21 'Barolo Marassio' is her top wine hailing from a west-facing 536m high vineyard with the same winemaking as the previous wine. These are some hauntingly beautiful expressions of Barolo from one of the greatest vintages of all time - there are only 4 bottles of each so don't hesitate on these!

Mee Godard
Mee Godard established the Domaine in Beaujolais' Morgon in 2013, having moved to France at an early age as the daughter of South Korean farmers. With farming in her blood, Mee studied Oenology at the Wine University of Oregon and worked as an intern at the likes of Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Burgundy! A bottle of Morgon changed her life and demonstrated the ability for the top crus of the region to age and develop complexity just as the greats of Burgundy can. Obviously the opportunity to purchase a Domaine in Morgon with holdings in the top sites was one that she couldn't pass up!
Since 2013, Mee has worked the vineyard in “lutte raisonnée”, where treatments are used only when responding to disease threats. The aim is to start converting the Domaine to organic farming slowly to avoid a shock to the vines. In 2017, Mee started to organically farm the six hectares with a clear goal of using biodynamic practices in the near future. Mee brings Burgundian winemaking techniques to Beaujolais with the aim of producing ageworthy wines with structure without compromising the varietal fruit or savouriness found in the tannins. To achieve this goal, Mee uses low-yielding fruit with roughly 60%-70% whole bunches in the ferment, a 3 week long maceration to soak up as much terroir as possible, followed by 12-18 months of ageing in oak barrels. These are perfect for those looking for alternatives to Burgundy amidst skyrocketing prices!
We've got a nice selection of these limited wines - only 18,000 bottles are produced across all cuvees annually! We have the '23 'Morgon' - an excellent introduction to Mee's work and includes grapes from famed sites Corcelette and Cote du Puy. The '22 'Metamorphoses Cote de Brouilly' is the only wine we have of hers from outside Morgon and shows a fuller style with velvety tannins. The '23 'Morgon Corcelette' is a testament to what Mee can achieve with one of the best sites in the region. This one is built for the long haul. Finally, we have a magnum of the '22 'Morgon Grand Cras' which is bound to impress and would made an excellent gift for this Christmas. This is one of Beaujolais' rising stars making small-scale, terroir-driven wines that don't break the bank like Burgundy. Don't sleep on these!
