Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey
The Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey estate was born in 2001 from the association of Pierre-Yves Colin (son of Marc) and Caroline Morey (daughter of Jean-Marc). Pierre-Yves left his family estate Domaine Marc Colin where he had built a reputation for producing exceptional white wines, acquiring about 2 hectares of the family vineyards and slowly purchasing other plots that make up the total 13 hectares across the villages: Saint-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet, Santenay, Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault that they operate today.
This Domaine works with some of the best terroirs in Burgundy which is why they are extremely concerned about the health and sustainability of the vineyards. The soils are worked or grassed in the steepest plots. With each vintage, the grapes are picked with a perfect balance between freshness and optimal maturity. The white wines are lightly whole bunch pressed, fermented with natural yeasts, aged on lees for up to 18 months in mostly in 350 litre barrels with no lees stirring and no filtration. PYCM also source all of their corks from one tiny supplier which are longer and wider than regular corks and untreated with paraffin. Bottles are then sealed with wax to prevent premature oxidation.
We've just stocked up on PYCM's latest 2022 vintage release so there's enough to go around for those that are keen to try one of the most exciting Domaines in Burgundy. We have the '22 'Aligote', '22 'Bourgogne Blanc' and the '22 'Hautes-Cotes de Beaune' which are absolutely fantastic for the price, especially considering how much Burgundy is selling for these days. We also have some of the '22 and '23 'Rose de Pinot Noir' which will be a must-have for the upcoming warmer months. We have bits and pieces of the reds at the moment: both the '21 and '22 'Vosne-Romanée' as well as a single bottle left of the '21 'Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Boudots Premier Cru'. This is one of the most sought-after Burgundy producers for a reason, pick up some of these to see what all the fuss is about!Claire Naudin
Claire Naudin is on the cutting-edge of Burgundy's vast and varied producers, with a unique site and approach to vineyard management and winemaking that sets her apart from her peers. Claire is based in the little-known village of Magny-lès-Villers which straddles the boundary between the two appellations of Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune and Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. Claire owns about 22 hectares of vineyards which spans across the villages of Aloxe, Ladoix, Echezeaux, and Nuit St Georges.
Claire Naudin officially took the Domaine Naudin Ferrand in 1994 after studying geology and agronomy and working in vineyards in both Australia and New Zealand.
“You need to want to become a winemaker, not have it thrust upon you.”
Claire refuses to use chemicals in the vineyard not only because they are detrimental to the health of the soil in the long run and the expression of terroir, but also because she believes that they are harmful to the workers in the vineyard. Despite working organically, Claire refuses to attain the accreditation as she believes that this route can lead to the standardisation of wine. Claire has painstakingly worked at making positive changes in the Domaine over the course of 16 years including: lower yields, improved trellising, improving the maturity and health of the grapes, strict sorting and removing unnecessary or disrespectful handling of the soil. In the cellar, she uses natural yeasts and the cellar is gravity-fed, meaning grapes are not damaged before they ferment. No filtration or fining is carried out as she prefers to rack the wine a few extra times before bottling.
We have a large selection of Claire's brilliant wines with something here for everyone. Of her whites, we have: '23 'Le Clou 34' (Aligote), '22 'Hautes Cotes de Nuits Clematis Vitalba', '22 'Hautes Cotes de Beaune Bellis Perennis' and the '22 'Galanthus Nivalis Pinot Blanc'. We have an even vaster selection of her reds: '22 'Hautes Cotes de Beaune Orchis Mascula', '22 'Hautes Cotes de Nuits Myosotis' and the '22 'Cotes de Nuits Village Viola Odorata'. From the more traditional villages, we have: '22 'Aloxe-Corton', '22 'Ladoix La Corvee 1er', '22 'Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er' and finally the '22 'Echezeaux Grand Cru'. This is an incredible range of wines from one of the most exciting winemakers in Burgundy; I'll be waiting to snap one up after giving you all the chance to take your share first. Not to mention the prices are actually reasonable compared to the extortionate gouging of most Burg producers. Snap these up!Domaine des Closiers
Domaine des Closiers are one of the most exciting estates at the moment based in Loire’s Saumur-Champigny. The estate was purchased in 2018 by Anatole de la Brosse who studied oenology and worked as a consultant in the area. This Domaine was established with the help of 2 Loire legends who mentored Anatole, Michel Chevré who works for Clos L’Ecotard and has helped Anatole to develop his biodynamic regime, and Nady Foucault of the iconic Clos Rougeard. With such a rich background, it’s easy to see how this Domaine have burst onto the scene and are already producing remarkable wines.
Domaine des Closiers are located in the village of Parnay in the heart of Saumur-Champigny and unlike the rest of the region, this site is characterised by hillside vineyards which brings something more distinctive to the wine and sets it apart from other producers in the region. When Anatole purchased the property, it already held 15 hectares of older vines with an average age of 35 years. With their inaugural 2019 vintage they immediately converted to biodynamic practices. Harvest is of course done by hand and only indigenous yeasts are used in fermentation. Another technique that makes these wines so special is the extended maceration on skins of about 1 month to add more depth and intrigue to the wine.
We bought in 2 of this great Domaine’s wines that we’re thrilled to share. We have the ‘21 ‘Les Closiers’ which is aged in tank for 6-8 months before it’s put into bottle. Despite this being their entry-level offering, this is deep and detailed and while enjoyable on release with some air, can still age for over a decade comfortably. We also have the 2020 ‘Les Coudraies’ which is made from grapes selected from certain top hillside parcels and then aged in barrel for 12 months. This is a much more structured wine that will reward time in the bottle but would drink well with a healthy decant. Many Loire-lovers are already calling this Domaine the Second Coming of Clos Rougeard but I will let you be the judge of that. When these sell for a fraction of Clos Rougeard’s prices, you may as well pick these up and scratch that itch of curiosity!MEET THE MAKER
