Collection: Grenache & Friends

Grenache is widely known as a grape varietal often blended with other grapes in order to achieve a superior overall product, but it is also produced as a single varietal. At one time the second most planted grape in the world, it remains one of the most prolific – in Spain, where it is known as Garnacha, it was for a long time the country’s most common red wine grape.

Grenache requires a hot, dry climate – explaining its overwhelming presence in Spain as well as Southern Rhone, Languedoc-Roussillon, here in Australia and in inland California’s San Joaquin Valley. It was, in fact, Australia’s most planted red wine grape variety until the Shiraz usurped it. A lighter, translucent colour belies its higher alcohol content, which gives a medium body to its distinctive fruit candy and cinnamon taste.
