Logan
A lot of you are probably already familiar with Logan. They are, after all, one of our best selling wines, representing some of the best value in the country.
Logan started with the unfamiliar NSW region of Central Ranges as their base and produce wine primarily from the sub-regions of Orange and Mudgee, where they also have spectacular cellar doors. Orange is the highest wine region in Australia and with its altitude, cool climate and volcanic soils, produces elegant, fragrant wines. Mudgee is slightly lower in altitude and therefore not as cold as Orange; however, the gravelly ironstone and quartz laced red loam soils are ideal to create wines of great depth and character.
I have selected 3 wines below to highlight that we have just re-stocked. The Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir come from the cooler Orange site whereas the Tempranillo comes from the slightly warmer Mudgee. This is an excellent chance to try some great wines at great prices and support NSW. Stock up!Monastero Suore Cistercensi
Monastero Suore Cistercensi are Sisters of the Cistercian order living and working at their monastery in Vitorchiano, roughly ninety minutes north of Rome in the district of Lazio. These nuns had been working the vineyards organically for a long time, although it wasn't until Giampiero Bea of Paolo Bea (whom we also stock) made their acquaintance and helped them get their wines out there that they became known to the world.
Today, wine enthusiasts around the world await the release of each vintage of the "nun wine" that has garnered a cult following. As you can imagine, this monastery of 80 nuns work with the vineyard and cellar with little, to no technology at all. The 5 hectares of vineyards are farmed organically by hand and fermentations are always spontaneous with native yeast. Giampiero Bea was captivated by their white wine, grown organically on volcanic terroir in a region that was dominated by highly mechanised, high-sulphur winemaking. They only use fruit grown on the estate, working mostly with Malvasia, Trebbiano, and Verdicchio, with small amounts of Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, and Merlot - all grown on volcanic soils.
We have 3 of these organic cult nun wines to go around - a white, orange and red. The 'Coenobium Bianco' is a blend of Trebbiano, Verdicchio, and Malvasia, harvested together and co-fermented without added yeasts or temperature stabilization. Aged on its fine lees in steel and fiberglass tanks, it is bottled just before the next harvest without fining or filtering. The 'Coenobium Ruscum' is a blend of the same three grapes with the addition of Grechetto but, for this wine, the juice is left to ferment on the lees for a period of two weeks or more, extracting all of the flavours, colors and textures of its fruit. Finally, the 'Benedic Rosso' is made from roughly equal portions of Ciliegiolo and Sangiovese and undergoes a 15-day natural fermentation without any forced stabilization. This is a great chance to try some fantastic organic, low-tech wines from these kind-hearted nuns that work the vineyards with love and care. Don't miss out!
