Welcome to 2026! We are kickstarting this year with some highlights from 2025 that are worth trying if you haven't already and worth buying again if you already have! We are continuing the series with the Italian white wines that piqued our attention - stay tuned for more categories throughout January!
Paglianetto Terravignata Verdicchio di Matelica 2024
Borgo Paglianetto produces biodnamic Verdicchio from the unique terroir with north-south exposition in the Alta Valle dell'Esino. This falls under the less common Verdicchio di Matellica appellation which holds up favourably to the more well-known Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi appellation. This wine is fresh, fruity and mineral - I can't see anyone disliking this wine!
This Verdicchio di Matelica opens with bright green-melon notes and a touch of spice and mint. The palate is fresh and juicy, mixing ripe orchard fruit with a clean, mineral edge. A little spice adds lift, giving the wine a lively, mouthwatering finish. It’s a straightforward reminder of how vibrant and characterful Verdicchio from Le Marche can be. - Aaron C
Cascina Val del Prete Luet Arneis 2024
Cascina Val del Prete (Valley of the Priest) are nestled in the northwest corner or Italy where they produce high-quality wines from indigenous grape varieties. Since 2013, their 10 hectares planted to Arneis, Barbera and Nebbiolo received organic certification and they are farmed biodynamically as well. The approach to winemaking at Cascina Val del Prete is non-interventionist. The makers use indigenous yeasts for their long fermentations and wines are eventually racked to barrel where they age until ready. These are great wines that speak to their place.
Classic Piedmont mouth-filling Arneis with tangy but riper notes. Yellow fruits like apricot, peach and pear. Mouthfeel is full bodied yet with with a resiny texture and acidity, to give a dry feel on the finish. 14% alc. Would love seafoods in a pasta or casserole dish, even with a touch of spice. - Michael L
Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Bianco 2024
Tenuta delle Terre Nere are one of the greatest and most important producers working in Etna, producing distinctive wines from indigenous grapes on a range of terroirs. Being located in an extreme climate (the name literally translates to property of the black lands), extreme attention to detail in the vineyard is what sets them apart from their competitors. Strenuous organic viticulture affords them the ability to be hands-off in the cellar and express the distinctive volcanic terroir that makes Etna so special. This is the estate's "entry-level" offering of its white wines and this always delivers. Can be drunk by itself or with a vast array of dishes.
A pristine Etna white blend made with minimal intervention. Think citrus fruits with a fresh salty edge on the nose. More in the mouth too, with elegant citrus and white peach fruits and that sense of minerality. So clean and fresh. 12.5% alc. Fine wine. - Michael L
Cantina Orsogna Lunaria Charisma Trebbiano d'Abruzzo 2024
Founded in 1964, Cantina Orsogna is a co-operative winery located in the Majella hills of Abruzzo, just 15 km from the Adriatic Sea. They are the largest producer of biodynamic wines in southern Italy and have been farming biodynamically since 2005. These wines have been a hit with lots of our customers since we had a tasting of them last year and we are always requested to re-stock them as soon as they run out - this textural white will show you why!
Bright straw in the glass, this Trebbiano d’Abruzzo opens with notes of white flowers, pear, and crisp apple. The palate is vibrant and mouth-watering, layered with citrus, stone fruit and a subtle saline edge. A clean, refreshing finish leaves a lasting impression. - Pete L
Le Battistelle Montesei Soave Classico 2024
Le Battistelle started in 2002, after the family gave up selling their grapes to a local wine Cooperative and began a proper vinification. The farm grows 9 hectares vineyard divided in many small pieces all situated in the hills of Brognoligo. It is here, where there is rich vine-growing activity, that between the highest and pebbly hills, where the soil is of volcanic origin that the grape variety Garganega matures and best expresses all its potential to create amazing wines. A mix of structure and elegance surrounded by a well balanced acidity and minerality. Le Battistelle recommend to have this as an aperitif or paired with fish dishes, white meat and mild cheese.
Seriously, who can go past Soave at this price. An absolute bargain if you ask me. Light in body and very refreshing as most entry-level Soave's are. It's reliant on it's minerality and freshness with a hint of complexity on the palate from a little lees contact before bottling. It ticks all the boxes for me. - Chris L
