A relatively unknown grape that finds its home in Sicilia, Italy, Frappato is most famously blended with Nero d’Avola to make Cerasuolo di Vittoria – Sicily’s only DOCG wine. However, many modern winemakers are now looking to produce single varietal wines from many of Sicily’s native grapes, and Frappato is among them.
Winemakers such as COS and Occhipinti are making Frappato as a fresh, fruity, dry red, with a wonderful crunchy acidity that crashes through the lifted red berries. Generally fresh, with little or no oak, wines from Frappato, are fruity and floral with a lively, sappy palate. A fantastic way to explore some of Sicily’s best-kept secrets!
