Tasting Notes
Pais is a native variety to Chile which was nearly extinct but a few more traditionally and naturally minded producers are trying to bring it back to the forefront of the Chilean wine scene. A Los Vinateros Bravos are making the best example of Pais I have seen. As the name suggests the Volcanico is grown on volcanic soils at high altitudes. This single vineyard site produces a more seriously, iron-rich and dense expression. The vineyard soils speak volumes in this wine and I absolutely love it. Decant well. - Chris L
Leonardo Erazo from A Los Vinateros Bravos is a unique personality of the Chilean wine scene. He works with dry-grown, ancient vineyards in the Itala Valley employing biodynamic principles but also engaging with local farmers who have generations of experience in the region. The wines are produced naturally in the cellar with the utilisation of natural yeasts, no additions except sulfur at bottling and no fining of filtration. These wines speak volumes of the terroir in which they are planted - Granitico, Volcanico... - they are charismatic, energetic and above all delicious. - Chris L
