Tasting Notes

The Amorotti Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is sourced from the estate’s certified organic vineyards in Loreto Aprutino, a prestigious "cru" area where high-altitude clay and limestone soils impart a signature structural tension. The nose is a complex mix of dark forest fruits, wild marjoram, and earthy leather, leading to a palate defined by its remarkable purity and "old-school" grip. Thanks to the cooling influence of the nearby Gran Sasso mountains on the vines, the wine maintains a bright acidity that lifts the concentrated plum and savory spice through a long, mineral-flecked finish. - Chris L

Amorotti is a small-batch, artisanal estate located in the historic hilltop town of Loreto Aprutino, Abruzzo. Led by Gaetano Carboni, who transitioned from a career in law to revitalise his family’s ancient agricultural estate, the winery released its first commercial vintage only in 2016. The farm itself has a deep history dating back to 1521; the Carboni-Amorotti family were notable pioneers in the region, being the first to export extra virgin olive oil to the United States in 1905. Today, the estate remains a polycultural farm, cultivating olives, grains, and nuts alongside its certified organic vineyards.

The winery's philosophy is rooted in extreme minimal intervention and a "near-mystical" respect for the local ecosystem. Winemaking takes place in an ancient, labyrinthine cellar where Gaetano relies entirely on spontaneous fermentation driven by indigenous yeasts and bacteria that have inhabited the space for centuries. Because this delicate microbial balance is so vital to the house style, visits to the cellar are strictly limited. The vineyards, situated at roughly 350 metres above sea level on clay and limestone soils, are farmed with a focus on biodiversity; in fact, the estate sells roughly 75% of its harvest to other producers, bottling only the most exceptional fruit under the Amorotti label.

Amorotti is frequently described by critics as "baby Valentini," as Gaetano is a close neighbour and protégé of the legendary Edoardo Valentini. The legendary producer provided guidance on clonal selection and traditional cellar practices, resulting in a stylistic overlap characterized by purity, structural tension, and age-worthiness. The portfolio consists of three primary wines—Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, and Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo—each raised in large, neutral Slavonian oak barrels. These wines are celebrated for their "old soul" and savory complexity, offering a refined, terroir-driven alternative to the more fruit-heavy styles often associated with the region.
