Tasting Notes
From a limestone-rich parcel in Varrains, this Chenin Blanc shows crystalline precision and quiet intensity. Aromas of pear, quince and lemon peel mingle with white flowers, chalk and a subtle nutty edge. The palate is taut and finely textured, with orchard fruit and citrus bound by bright acidity and a cool mineral line that reflects its tuffeau soils. Lees ageing adds gentle weight and savoury depth, while the finish is long, saline and focused. A refined, terroir-driven Saumur Blanc with the structure to evolve beautifully over time. - Chris L
Antoine Sanzay is one of the leading names in Saumur-Champigny, producing pure and finely etched expressions of Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc from his family’s vineyards in Varrains. Having inherited around 11 hectares of vines from his grandparents, Antoine initially sold fruit to the local co-operative before launching his own domaine in the early 2000s. His reputation has since grown rapidly, with a focus on organic farming, old vines, and a patient, low-intervention approach in the cellar.
The domaine’s holdings include prized parcels such as Les Poyeux, one of the appellation’s most renowned lieux-dits, where deep limestone and sandy soils bring perfume and elegance to Cabernet Franc. Across his range, fermentations are native, extraction is gentle, and élevage is carried out in a mix of cement, large foudres and older barrels, emphasising finesse over power. His whites from Chenin Blanc, including Les Salles Martin, show the same clarity and mineral drive.
Sanzay’s wines are recognised for their brightness, precision and authenticity, offering both early charm and the structure to age gracefully. Today, the domaine stands as a benchmark in Saumur-Champigny and a leading voice for the Loire’s new generation of thoughtful, terroir-driven growers.
