Tasting Notes
The Heaven and Earth vineyard is a stunningly beautiful hillside planting, tucked into a secluded coastal valley just east of the tiny town of Occidental in western Sonoma County. This incredible site is organically farmed with meticulous attention to detail by viticultural guru Greg Adams, who also tends our Que Syrah vineyard a bit further west. The small valley that is home to this impeccable vineyard is protected by a forested ridge to the west that shields the vines from the direct impacts of incoming weather from the nearby Pacific Ocean, 8 miles away. The unique position of this site coupled with its inherently short diurnal shift allows the Pinot Noir to ripen slowly throughout the day and night, resulting in small berries and dense structure in the wine. Deep, and effusively aromatic, the resulting wine benefits from fermentation without destemming, to elevate the detailed texture, soaring aromatics and fine-grained tannin that are hallmarks of this amazing vineyard. Arnot-Roberts Wines is a joint project of schoolhood friends, Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts. Since founding their winery in 2001, the duo has been one of the most progressive and revolutionary producers on the California landscape. Together with a small group of fellow trailblazers, they have led the way to help re-define the paradigm of what California wine can be and taste like.
Winemaking at Arnot-Roberts borrows from both the old world and new. the general technique includes indigenous fermentations, little or no new wood, and whole-cluster inclusion for the red wines. Chardonnay is fermented in stainless steel and then aged in neutral wood.
Arnot-Roberts Wines have shown that California Wine not only can shine at the table but can also express the individuality of the sites they come from. It can age and develop in complexity from post-bottle youthfulness to the glories of a fully mature and harmonious bottle (and everything in-between). These are today's measuring sticks for great and interesting wine, whether from California, or France, Italy, Tasmania, or anywhere that strives to produce quality wine.
