Tasting Notes
The Astrale Chianti Riserva is a quintessential Tuscan red produced predominantly from Sangiovese grapes in the heart of the Chianti region, with its "Riserva" designation ensuring extended aging in oak and bottle that builds complexity. This results in a wine with a brilliant ruby to brick-red hue, offering an intense and persistent bouquet of ripe red cherries, plums, and violets, layered with subtle notes of dried herbs, tobacco leaf, and vanilla. On the medium-bodied palate, it is warm and structured with soft, velvety tannins and a vibrant acidity that delivers flavors of red and dark fruits, leading to a long, elegant finish with hints of chocolate, spice, and a characteristic earthy or mineral edge. - Chris L
Astrale is a cooperative project created in 2011 by Italian winemaker Peppe Randazzo and his team. The project aims for a "quality without boundaries" approach, blending wines sourced from different iconic regions across Italy, while maintaining a strong connection to its Tuscan "heart". The name, a Latin term for the celestial sphere, reflects this wide-ranging, borderless philosophy.
The core winemaking approach involves sourcing quality grapes from a network of local farmers across various regions, including Tuscany, Abruzzo, Puglia, and Sicily. The winemaking team applies modern and precise techniques to preserve the intensity of aromas and the full potential of the different grape varieties. Their philosophy leverages the idea of blending different regions and sometimes different vintages (as in their NV Rosso) to create a consistent, high-quality, and approachable Italian wine experience.
The Astrale portfolio includes a range of wines, most notably the Astrale Chianti DOCG and Chianti Riserva, which are rooted firmly in Tuscany and made primarily from Sangiovese with small additions of local varieties like Ciliegiolo and Canaiolo. They also produce a popular non-vintage 'Rosso' blend (combining Primitivo, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, and Nero d'Avola) and white and rosé blends that draw grapes from multiple Italian regions. These wines are generally known for their rich fruit character, smooth tannins, and excellent value.
