Tasting Notes
The Clos du Cromin is located on the north side of the Meursault vineyards, near the border of Volnay. Surrounded by dry-stone walls and with a south/south-east exposure, the soil is deep and rich in red clay, although there is still a lot of rock at the base of the vineyard. It's a powerful terroir ‚– a sunny site that ripens early according to Marc Bachelet ‚– and it is equally conducive to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Marc and Alex Bachelet work with a small 0.21 hectare parcel of vines here ‚– half of the vines were planted in 1937, the rest in 1998. Like many of Bachelet Monnot 2015 whites this has both vibrant freshness and intensity although here there is serious density of fruit for village level. The note below again captures it well. An outstanding and character filled, single site Meursault.
'The 2015 Meursault Clos du Cromin, half the vines planted by the brothers' grandfather 90 years ago, has a slightly muffled bouquet, although it appears to gain clarity with time; developing scents of shucked oyster shells and lemon. There is a lot of horsepower on the palate, a little richer than I was expecting, yet maintaining fine balance, a lovely salinity coming through on the finish that urges you back for another sip. 'Everyone is on the lookout for Burgundy's next white-wine star, , and brothers Marc and Alexandre Bachelet, who created this property in 2005 from their father's and uncle's land, are quietly making a solid claim. Their low-key winery is in Dezizelès-Maranges, at the southern tip of the Côte de Beaune, but their vineyards represent a great cross-section of Puligny, Chassagne and Meursault. Theirs is winemaking in the current, structure-minded style; lots of air for the juice, fermenting in larger barrels, finishing in steel.
