Tasting Notes
What a wine! The 1314AD Chardonnay is a blend of barrels across all of the estates vineyards including their top sites meaning it gets the same attention and care as their top wines. It's a selection of the barrels that didn't make the cut for the top wines and are assembled in a style that produces a fresher Chardonnay that is meant to be enjoyed in it's youth but by no means is simple! This is a complex and thoughtful wine that overdelivers for the dollars. A portion of the wine is aged in newer oak barrels which richness and oak spice to the citrus and stone fruit focussed palate. - Pete L
Bannockburn Vineyards is a pioneering, family-owned estate in the Moorabool Valley near Geelong, Victoria, founded in 1974 by Stuart Reginald Hooper. Driven by a lifelong passion for Burgundy, Stuart planted classic varieties—particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay—on challenging, low-fertility volcanic and limestone soils to create wines with a pronounced sense of place.
Today, the vineyards span multiple estate-grown blocks, from early plantings in the 1970s to carefully managed newer sites, including high-density Chardonnay and Pinot Noir plots such as Serré, Olive Tree Hill, Grigsby, and De La Terre. These single-vineyard sites are tended with purpose—dry-grown, organic in conception, and crafted to showcase vineyard personality.
Under winemaker Matt Holmes, who began in 2015, the style has evolved with minimalist intervention, wild ferments, and more flexible whole-bunch use, bringing a new finesse and purity to the wines while still honoring the estate’s terroir-first philosophy.
Bannockburn’s wines—from estate blends to celebrated single-vineyard bottlings—express depth, mineral detail, and structural precision. The estate remains a benchmark for Victorian cool-climate wine, marrying Burgundian inspiration with a uniquely local identity.
