Tasting Notes
Le Domaine sits at the heart of the Baudry range, drawing on a mix of gravel and clay-limestone parcels that give both fragrance and structure. The nose is immediately expressive, with bright red and black fruits – raspberry, cherry and plum – lifted by floral tones and a subtle leafy freshness that is so typical of Cabernet Franc. On the palate it strikes a lovely balance: supple, juicy fruit from the gravelly soils married to a fine mineral backbone and savoury depth from the limestone slopes. Tannins are polished and silky, carrying through to a long, pure finish. This is an elegant and versatile Chinon – delicious now with a quick decant, but equally capable of developing for a decade in the cellar. - Chris L
Widely regarded as one of the benchmark estates of Chinon, Domaine Bernard Baudry has earned a reputation for producing Cabernet Franc of exceptional purity, finesse and longevity. Founded in 1975 by Bernard Baudry, the domaine is now run by his son Mathieu, who has carried forward the estate’s organic farming and precise, terroir-driven approach.
The domaine spans around 30 hectares across a remarkable diversity of soils – from the gravel and sand near the Vienne River (giving supple, aromatic wines) to clay-limestone slopes (bringing depth and structure), and the tuffeau chalk hillsides (which yield some of the most age-worthy and mineral expressions of Cabernet Franc in the Loire). This mosaic of terroirs allows the Baudrys to craft a range of cuvées that showcase Chinon’s full spectrum.
The reds, whether from the easy-drinking Les Granges, the silky and refined Les Grézeaux, or the powerful, cellar-worthy La Croix Boissée, all share a hallmark clarity of fruit and sense of place. Small amounts of Chenin Blanc are also produced, offering wines of precision and minerality that echo the domaine’s thoughtful touch.
In the cellar, élevage is adapted to each terroir: cement, large old oak, or barrel, always with minimal intervention to preserve freshness and authenticity. The result is wines that are both approachable in youth and capable of evolving beautifully over decades – wines that epitomise the elegance and versatility of Cabernet Franc.
