Tasting Notes
This one's a bit of fun from Bourgoin. Marée Haute, or High Tide, is a cognac cut down to strength with a splash of actual seawater, a nod to the old merchant navy days when the sea spray would mingle with the barrels out on long voyages. It's aged ten years in wide grained Limousin oak, then brought to 43% with a mix of micro-filtered seawater and local artesian spring water. As always with Bourgoin there's nothing added, no sugar, no colouring, no nothing. A properly characterful cognac with a whisper of the sea about it. - Pete L
Bourgoin is a family-run Cognac estate based in the tiny village of Tarsac, near Saint-Saturnin in the Charente. Today it is led by Frédéric Bourgoin, who has taken a distinctly vigneron approach to Cognac, producing spirits that are about vineyard and terroir rather than the polished house style of the larger producers. The family vineyards are farmed organically, with the eaux-de-vie distilled and matured on the property and bottled without unnecessary manipulation. Alongside their Cognacs, Bourgoin produces an eclectic range of spirits and verjus, often experimenting with different casks, ageing and distillation techniques. These are characterful, individual spirits that offer a very different perspective on Cognac - more like the work of a small grower-producer than a traditional Cognac house.
