Tasting Notes
Every year, the Brash Higgins Nero d'Avola (NDV) is the red wine from Brad I most look forward to tasting. It's not only the wine making techniques he uses - organic fruit, amphora, light plunging, wild yeast, low sulphur - but its the end result. Think of the smell of Negroni - herbs, spics, red and black fruits - in exquisite harmony and elegance. The NDV will never disappoint and will always intrigue those of you looking for an experience. - Chris L
Always love this Vino, so fascinating and intriguing. This year for the first time Brad has played with a tiny portion of whole bunch, giving a bit of that spicy Mexcal vibe. Yet Nori and bergamot notes. Slightly more structured this vintage but the acidity from the Nero d’ Avola grape always gives plenty of energy and refreshment. - Miki B.
We adore the philosophy and expression of all the Brash Higgins wines. Each wine has a unique approach in order to reflect the parcel of fruit in different ways. There's a plethora of alternate fermentation vessels used to harbour the grapes that are picked at different ripeness levels. The result... a range of incredibly versatile and tactile wines from McLaren Vale.
Brash Higgins aka Brad Hickey was once a sommelier at some of the great restaurants around the world. Love had other plans for Brad though and he found himself in the sandy soils of McLaren Vale where Brash Higgins was born. The Brash Higgins home vineyard, Omensetter, is located between the Willunga Escarpment and the Gulf of Saint Vincent on an easterly aspect. Shiraz and Cabernet were originally planted here, but Brash has since added Nero d'Avola and the rare Chinese/Greek Crystal variety. The vineyard is planted on red-brown clay over limestone and benefits from the cooling influence of the southern ocean. The Omensetter vineyard is certified organic and all of the other vineyards Brash sources from also encompass this approach.
