Off a single dry-farmed vineyard in Malmesbury (South Africa) planted 41 years ago, where decomposed granite gives the wine its mineral edge. Danie and Hugo Carinus are cousins and the fifth generation on the family farm, and this is their way into Swartland Chenin. Nine months in a mix of old French oak and stainless steel, so there is real texture to it without the freshness going anywhere. Zesty citrus and stone fruit, a pithy, savoury finish, and it punches well above what you pay for it. - Pete L
Carinus Family Vineyards is the project of Danie and Hugo Carinus, friends and distant relatives whose families have been farming vineyards in South Africa for generations. Based across Stellenbosch and the Swartland, they are first and foremost growers, farming highly regarded sites in Polkadraai, Devon Valley and around Malmesbury. After years of supplying fruit to some of South Africa’s leading producers, they established Carinus in 2011 to bottle a small amount of their best fruit themselves. Working with winemakers Lukas van Loggerenberg and Chris Alheit, the focus is particularly on Chenin Blanc, alongside Syrah and Colombard. The wines are fresh, precise and restrained, putting the quality of the vineyards firmly ahead of winemaking technique.
