Tasting Notes
Hard to believe the price this sits on the shelf for given the quality on offer. This is Syrah that evokes all the savoury pepper and spice you typically see from the Northern Rhone but from a completely different region, Stellenbosch in South Africa! It's still layered with fruit that sits between juicy and the more bolder side of the variety that makes it a really approachable wine. - Pete L
Carinus Family Vineyards is the project of Danie and Hugo Carinus, friends and distant relatives whose families have been farming vineyards in South Africa for generations. Based across Stellenbosch and the Swartland, they are first and foremost growers, farming highly regarded sites in Polkadraai, Devon Valley and around Malmesbury. After years of supplying fruit to some of South Africa’s leading producers, they established Carinus in 2011 to bottle a small amount of their best fruit themselves. Working with winemakers Lukas van Loggerenberg and Chris Alheit, the focus is particularly on Chenin Blanc, alongside Syrah and Colombard. The wines are fresh, precise and restrained, putting the quality of the vineyards firmly ahead of winemaking technique.
