Tasting Notes
A very good value Malbec which our customers can't get enough of. Blackcurrent and cassis character oozes from this wine with a touch of earthiness. Soft, round and velvet in the mouth. Can't go past it! - Chris L
Catena Zapata is Argentina’s most iconic winery, founded in 1902 by Italian immigrant Nicola Catena in Mendoza. Over four generations, the family has played a defining role in establishing Argentina as a world-class wine region, particularly through its pioneering work with high-altitude Malbec. Today, the estate is led by Nicolás Catena Zapata and his daughter Laura, who continue to drive innovation and uphold the family’s legacy.
The vineyards are planted at some of the highest elevations in Mendoza, between 900 and 1,500 metres above sea level, in sites such as Adrianna and Nicasia. These extreme conditions—intense sunlight, cool nights, rocky soils—produce fruit of remarkable concentration, freshness and structure. Malbec is the flagship, but the estate also produces outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and other varieties that highlight Mendoza’s diversity.
In the cellar, the approach blends tradition and cutting-edge research: careful vineyard selection, small-lot fermentations, and thoughtful oak maturation. Laura Catena has also established the Catena Institute of Wine, dedicated to scientific studies of terroir and sustainability, furthering Argentina’s international reputation.
Catena Zapata’s wines—ranging from the iconic Nicolás Catena Zapata and Malbec Argentino to site-specific bottlings from the Adrianna Vineyard—are celebrated for their depth, balance and ageing capacity, standing among the great wines of the world.
