Tasting Notes

Planted in 1979 Marion’s Pinot Noir comes from one of the oldest plantings in Tasmania. A dark berry fruited, brooding and muscular style, our Marion’s reflects the nature of this wonderful site, and the structure West Tamar Pinot is known for, whilst holding true to the Chatto house style of intensity over concentration, and natural balance. - Winery Note

Apart from his innate talent, what sets Jim Chatto apart is his passion and dedication to winemaking. Having risen quickly through the ranks to become Chief Winemaker for McWilliam's Wines, Jim also makes wine in Tasmania under his own label Chatto Wines. As a celebrated wine judge too, Jim is regarded for his knowledge, insight and leadership skills, not to mention his tasting expertise.

Despite Jim's long relationship with the Hunter Valley (having made wine for Tamburlaine, First Creek, Pepper Tree and of course, McWilliam's), his love for Tasmanian pinot began when he worked with Rosevears in the late 1990s, and during a judging stint at the 1999 Tasmanian Wine Show.

Eventually Jim and his wife Daisy took the plunge and purchased a block of land in the beautiful Huon Valley. Planting began in 2007, and the first vintage release was in 2013. Their Chatto Wines label adds gravitas to the landscape of Australian Pinot Noir. Jim and Daisy are genuine small producers, crafting authentic wines from a range of sites across Tassie. The depth of knowledge and experience behind the wines is phenomenal.
