Tasting Notes
It is a warm North facing site located at 43 08 23 S. The soil/rock type is Permian Limestone and Calcareous mudstone, or as the locals call it 'Cygnet Cement'. The block is littered with fossils from this period. Planting began in 2007, only Pinot Noir (1.5 ha) to nine different clones (predominantly the earlier ripening Dijon clones) ‚– all on own roots. Spacing is 5000 vines/ha. Lovingly managed by Paul and Gilli Lipscombe. - Winery Note
Apart from his innate talent, what sets Jim Chatto apart is his passion and dedication to winemaking. Having risen quickly through the ranks to become Chief Winemaker for McWilliam's Wines, Jim also makes wine in Tasmania under his own label Chatto Wines. As a celebrated wine judge too, Jim is regarded for his knowledge, insight and leadership skills, not to mention his tasting expertise.
Despite Jim's long relationship with the Hunter Valley (having made wine for Tamburlaine, First Creek, Pepper Tree and of course, McWilliam's), his love for Tasmanian pinot began when he worked with Rosevears in the late 1990s, and during a judging stint at the 1999 Tasmanian Wine Show.
Eventually Jim and his wife Daisy took the plunge and purchased a block of land in the beautiful Huon Valley. Planting began in 2007, and the first vintage release was in 2013. Their Chatto Wines label adds gravitas to the landscape of Australian Pinot Noir. Jim and Daisy are genuine small producers, crafting authentic wines from a range of sites across Tassie. The depth of knowledge and experience behind the wines is phenomenal.
