Tasting Notes
The majority of the fruit was destemmed for wild fermentation with a small portion of whole bunches for perfume and structure. Aged in a combination of new and old French oak barriques and puncheons, with a selection to determine the most structural and pristine barrels for the reserve bottling. A pinot typified by perfume, spice, nuanced tannin and freshness. Medium bodied, with concentration of fruit tempered by fine structure. Elegant and ethereal. Enjoy with game meats and decanting is recommended. - Distributor Note
Clarence House Estate is a distinguished cool-climate winery located just north of Hobart, nestled in the foothills of the Meehan Ranges at Clarence Plains (near the Coal River). The estate began planting vines in 1998 on a northeast-facing slope that captures early morning sun while avoiding harsh afternoon heat, creating ideal conditions for balanced ripening.
Over time, the vineyard has grown to around 12–16 hectares and supports a diverse mix of varieties including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tempranillo. The fruit is now vinified under the Clarence House label, which is structured across three tiers—Clarence Plains, Clarence House Estate, and Clarence House Reserve—each expressing increasing depth and barrel selection. The Reserve bottlings are meticulously crafted from the best barrels and often see extended oak maturation.
Winemaking is entrusted to Anna Pooley and Justin Bubb of Pooley Wines in nearby Cambridge. Their approach is gentle and rooted in elegance—hand-harvested fruit, low-input farming, thoughtful use of oak, and a focus on freshness and subtlety. The result is a range of wines defined by delicate aromatics, graceful structure, and old-world poise—all clearly born of Tasmanian terroir.
