Tasting Notes

When talking about New Zealand Pinot Noir people rave about Central Otago and when they talk about New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc they use to rave about Marlborough. Well I've got news for you... Corofin is from Marlborough and in our minds winemaker Mike Paterson is up there with the best Pinot Noir in the country. Mike specifically and purposefully sources fruit from only the most prestigious vineyards in Marlborough - Settlement, Cowley, Churton... the list goes on.The Churton Vineyard Pinot Noir looks closer to Burgundy than I've ever seen from a New Zealand producer. The organically-farmed vineyard is uniquely positioned between the Waihopai Valley and Omaka's high country, which is has more of a continental climate than Marlborough proper. The wine has red fruits and sweet spice with a mild reduction that are only the beginning of this wines complexity. It's only going to get better with time too. There are wild berries, roses and char.

- Chris L

Corofin is a boutique Marlborough winery founded in 2014 by Mike and Anna Paterson, with a focus on single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Mike, who spent many years as a winemaker at Neudorf in Nelson, created Corofin to highlight the subtleties of Marlborough’s vineyard sites rather than produce region-wide blends. Grapes are sourced from carefully selected family-owned vineyards in the Wairau, Southern Valleys and coastal subregions, where low-intervention farming practices emphasise soil health and fruit balance.

In the cellar, the approach is deliberately restrained: hand harvesting, wild fermentation, gentle extraction and judicious use of oak ensure wines of purity and finesse. Each bottling is made in small quantities, designed to express the nuances of soil, aspect and microclimate rather than cellar technique.

Corofin has quickly earned a reputation as one of Marlborough’s most thoughtful small producers, creating wines that balance elegance and freshness with a strong sense of place.
