Tasting Notes

Blackcurrant, black cherry and cedar combine with edges of black olive to present a magnificent, aged release wine. The concentrated fruit profile leans to black, rather than red fruit, with an elegant, fine palate providing integrated, highly quality French oak. There is liquorice root and baked blood plum, with the structured, fine tannin so typical of our gravel dominant soils. An age worthy pleasure. - Winemaker Note

Crawford River is a pioneering winery in Victoria’s far south-west Henty region, established in 1975 by John and Catherine Thomson. At a time when the area was little known for viticulture, the Thomsons identified its potential for cool-climate wines, planting vineyards on ancient basalt soils over limestone. Their foresight helped put Henty on the map as a source of some of Australia’s most distinctive and age-worthy whites.

The estate is best known for Riesling, which has become a benchmark for Australia: intensely aromatic, structured, and capable of decades of graceful ageing. Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon also form part of the range, all grown with an emphasis on sustainable farming and meticulous vineyard care.

Today the estate is guided by second-generation winemaker Belinda Thomson, who continues the family’s focus on purity, longevity and site expression. Under her stewardship, Crawford River remains one of Australia’s most respected producers, delivering wines of clarity, balance and remarkable regional character.
