Tasting Notes

All the dirts or vineyards are blended into this Pinot- Holgates Rd Vineyard, Berrys Creek Vineyard and Silverwaters Vineyard in Leongatha (Gippsland). It's the entry level Pinot Noir from the Dirty Three and I'm a huge fan. I also love their single vineyard wines, but this sums up good value Pinot Noir because it shows some real interest and complexity. Cherry fruited, bunchy spice and truffle. Fine on the palate and nice persistence. - Chris L

What started in 1998 as a fun project between three friends has evolved and refined into a terroir showcase of Southern Gippsland, now helmed by husband & wife team: Marcus Satchell & Lisa Satori. Both hail from Gippsland and although Lisa's background lies in investment banking, the passion of winemaker Marcus led her to complete a degree in viticulture. Today you're likely to find her tending the vines in their three dirts, 'between the penguins and the proms'. The three dirts refer to the vineyards from which Dirty Three Wines source their Pinot Noir. Dirt 1 is from Berrys Creek Vineyard, their most northerly and highest altitude vineyard at 150m above sea level. Originally planted in 1999, the dirt here is very fertile, free-draining red volcanic soil. Dirt 2 is the Tilson Vineyard which was planted in 1997 and sits on the outskirts of the Leongatha township. The dirt here is also fertile, but a mixture of brown & red clay that sits 100m above sea level. Finally, Holgates Road Vineyard is the source of Dirt 3, and in fact, the original dirt from which the whole project began. The vines were planted in 1998 on sandy loam over clay, at 70m above sea level and although the soil is free-draining, it retains a lot less moisture despite being closest to the ocean. This results in reduced vigour, smaller bunches and berries, making it the latest ripening of the three dirts. Marcus and Lisa's combined enthusiasm and commitment to Gippsland's unique site expressions of Pinot Noir and the wily grape itself, have brought this young and extremely exciting project a very bright future. Dirty Three Wines are working with some of the best vineyards in arguably the best Australian region for Pinot Noir and as they say, 'it's all about the dirt'! - Distributor Note
