Tasting Notes

This is one of the Chardonnay's of the year. Tightly wound and complex with a mineral drive that compares to none other at this level. Powerful in its presence, yet fine and elegantly poised. Decant. Loved it! - Chris L

Domaine Ballot-Millot is a highly esteemed, historic family-run winery located in the heart of Meursault, Burgundy, with a heritage spanning an impressive 17 generations back to 1630. The domaine is currently managed by Charles Ballot, who took over from his father Philippe in 2000, bringing a dynamic blend of traditional respect for the land and modern techniques to the estate. The focus of the domaine is on producing exceptional, terroir-driven Chardonnay-based white wines, alongside a selection of elegant Pinot Noir reds.

The domaine spans approximately 11.5 hectares, with coveted vineyard holdings across several prestigious appellations, including Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet, Beaune, Pommard, and Volnay. The crown jewels of their white wine production include parcels in Meursault's finest Premier Crus, such as Perrières, Genevrières (featuring 70-to-85-year-old vines), and Charmes, as well as Les Narvaux. For their red wines, they hold high-quality sites like the Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds and Pommard 1er Cru Pézerolles. The age of the vines, many of them 40-70 years old, contributes significantly to the concentration and complexity of their wines.

Charles Ballot has implemented a modern and environmentally conscious approach to viticulture and winemaking. He has outlawed chemical weeding, introducing soil plowing and adopting organic practices to promote soil health and biodiversity. In the cellar, the philosophy is one of minimal intervention, allowing the complexity and finesse of the wines to flourish. New oak is used sparingly—around 25% for Premier Crus and 10% for village wines—to ensure the wood influence does not mask the wine's intrinsic character. The resulting wines are renowned for their purity, balance, and vibrant minerality, beautifully expressing their unique Burgundian origins.
